homemade bath salts with essential oils

Creating your own Epsom salt foot soak with essential oils is a fabulous way to indulge in self-care. It also makes a great gift idea because making them yourself couldn’t be easier.

With just a few simple ingredients and some pretty jars, you can make this easy DIY recipe for Epsom salt foot soak with essential oils.

The benefits of Epsom salt Soaks

While a bubbly bath tub can be lots of fun, bath salts are more than just a simple bath time addition.

There are many benefits to using bath salts to soak your feet in the bath.

Here are a few of the great benefits of bath salts:

  • stress relief

  • relaxing

  • natural exfoliation

  • detoxifying

  • relieves muscle tension

  • relief for dry, itchy skin conditions

Bath salts are a great base for other healthy ingredients like essential oils.

If you add essential oils directly into your bath water undiluted, the oil and water won’t mix. The oils will simply float to the top and irritate your skin because they are too concentrated.

However, when they are mixed in with Epsom bath salts, the essential oil mixes and dilutes so it can then be distributed throughout the water.

This gives your bathing ritual the added health benefits of salts and essential oils!

Making your own bath salts is a simple project with just four ingredients.

You can make them for yourself and add different ingredients to customize it even further, or even give them as a homemade gift.

Here are the supplies you need for an Epsom salt foot soak with essential oils:

1. Epsom bath salts

I prefer to use Epsom bath salts by Dr. Teal’s in my bath water because it is a great value and completely natural.

Get the pure Epsom bath salts that are not already scented or flavored with any essential oils. That way you can customize the bath salt recipe however you like!

2. Coconut oil

Adding coconut oil is totally optional to this recipe but it does add another layer of relaxation and comfort.

It is a really great ingredient for moisturizing and soothing your skin. Plus, it is one of the top carrier oils for using with essential oils.

3. Lavender essential oils

Lavender essential oils are known for their relaxing and calming properties. This is why I choose to use Lavender essential oils in my bath salts recipe.

You can also mix things up by adding in other common bath salt essential oils listed below, to your DIY bath salts.

4. Small glass jar

Small glass jars are the perfect way to mix and save your bath salts for future use. Any 8 oz or 1 cup glass jar also works great for gift-giving!

how to make homemade bath salts

Homemade epsom salt foot soak Recipe

This easy DIY bath salts recipe is quite simple and doesn’t have to be very exact.

Use about 15 drops of your favorite essential oil for every 1 cup of bath salts.

Begin by melting 1 tablespoon of coconut oil.

Then measure out 30 drops of essential oils (I recommend Lavender!) into the coconut oil.

Add this mixture to 2 cups of bath salts, giving it a good stir to make sure the oils are evenly distributed.

Pour the mixture into a glass jar and store in a cool, dry place until ready to use. Or adhere a bow or tie a ribbon to give as a homemade gift.

Using Bath Salts with Essential Oils

To use homemade bath salts, simply add 1/4 – 1/2 cups of the salt mixture to your bath water under running water to fully dissolve.

Soak in the warm bath for 20-25 minutes or until fully relaxed.

After a nice bath, I recommend following it up with this simple DIY coconut oil lotion that is also made from essential oils.

Your pores are open and relaxed which is the perfect time for long-lasting moisturization.

A quick HAck For Making bath soaks

Do you have leftover essential oils bottles that are empty? Don’t throw them away.

You can make small batches of bath salts with any leftover essential oil bottles. It’s a great way to get every last drop of any oil you purchase, and an easy way to make Epsom salt foot soaks with essential oils.

Simply place your empty essential oil bottles in a small bowl of Epsom salt (about 1/2 cup of salt), pushing them down into the salt.

Leave them overnight and in the morning remove the jar and stir the salts.

Now you have a few completely empty bottles for other projects and a nice, soothing bath in your future!
