What to Include in Your Essential Oil Sugar Scrub Recipe

Sugar scrubs are fabulous mechanical exfoliators. Add in a few other ingredients to nourish your skin and make it soft and you have a wonderful homemade beauty product. This essential oil sugar scrub recipe is easy to make and completely adaptable.

You can use sugar scrubs on your hands to keep them soft, on your elbows to get rid of those dry skin patches, your feet for the same (great for home pedicures!), or anywhere else you’d like to keep your skin soft and glowing.

I like to include a good oil like sweet almond oil, which is also great for skin – it’s hypoallergenic and includes Vitamins E and A – great ingredients for skin care. Sweet almond oil’s many benefits make it a great partner with sugar for a great scrub.

While you can certainly use just those two ingredients for a simple sugar scrub recipe, I like to include some essential oils for their fragrance and for additional benefits.

Any oil that can be used topically could work – I like to check my reference guide for oils that offer more skin nourishing benefits. Here’s what I like to use (choose one for your simple sugar scrub recipe):

  • Lavender

  • Melaleuca

  • Roman or German Chamomile

  • Geranium

  • Palmarosa

  • Ylang Ylang

  • Frankincense

  • Patchouli

  • Sandalwood

Not sure where to buy essential oils? My favorite place — Rocky Mountain Oils.

This simple sugar scrub recipe couldn’t be more easy to make – there are just three ingredients (and some jars to put it in, of course!). You’ll need:

    • sugar – any kind will do
    • sweet almond oil
  • essential oils of your choice
  • mason jars (4 oz. are great for gift giving)

Even better, this recipe is easily adaptable – add more or less oil, depending on how ‘scrubby’ you want it to feel. You can really personalize it and make it your own.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup sugar – white or brown

  • ½ cup sweet almond oil

  • 15 drops essential oil

Instructions:

  1. Combine all ingredients in a small glass bowl and mix well.

  2. Put mixture in an air-tight container.

  3. Pour about a tablespoon of sweet almond oil over the top, to keep it from drying out.

  4. Close lid & keep closed when not in use.

  5. To use: scoop out one tablespoon and rub onto wet skin, rinsing well after use.

  6. Note: This recipe can easily be doubled or tripled and packaged into small jars for gift-giving.
