where to buy essential oils

Essential oils are powerful substances and should be used with caution, especially in the brands you choose to purchase. Where can you buy essential oils that are high quality?

There are many, many companies marketing and selling essential oils today — some good, a few great, and a some not so great.

No matter where you choose to purchase your oils, there are a few things you should consider.

Where to buy high quality essential oils:

Different kinds of essential oils

There are many different kinds of essential oils. From oils that are used as perfuming or flavoring agents (these are NOT the kinds you want to be using, unless you’re making perfume) to “therapeutic” grade.

But there are no governmental regulations about what can be put on those bottle labels.

This isn’t necessarily a bad thing but it does mean that you have to do your homework. You want to purchase high quality essential oils from a reputable company.

Most of the essential oils manufactured today are distilled and processed for other products and uses (like cosmetics, foods & perfumes).

These are the kinds of essential oils that you do not want to use for everyday health needs.

The market for pure, unadulterated essential oils is a quite small in comparison. So, it can be difficult to know where to buy essential oils that are high quality.

Buying essential oils at a local store

The essential oils sold at local stores are likely not the best choice. Unless otherwise stated, they are probably lower quality or perfume grade oils that are not going to give you any therapeutic benefits.

Even if the bottle says 100% pure that doesn’t mean it’s all pure essential oil (it might just contain 1% oil and 99% filler).

Buying essential oils online

Instead of purchasing that oil at your local grocery store, take a look at the reputable companies available and find one that fits your needs.

Three of my top places to buy essential oils online include:

ROcky mountain oils

This is one of my favorite online brands! They focus on aromatic and topical usage (even putting the codes right on their labels so you know exactly how to use your oils at-a-glance). And since I live in Colorado, these oils are my go-to!

One of my favorite features is their transparent testing practices. You can type the batch number found on the bottom of each bottle into a page on their website and view the GC/MS test for that oil.

Be sure to check out their roll-on oils and blends (pre-diluted and ready to use!).

Plant Therapy

Another great brand that I enjoy using. Robert Tisserand, a well-known figure in the Aromatherapy world, joined their team and helped to create a line of safe essential oil blends for children.

They also sell Hydrosols (the aromatic remains after the steam-distillation process) which work well for children and pets – and they are a great complement to your healthy living arsenal.

PANGEA ORGANICS

Pangea Organics is known for the vegan, cruelty-free, and certified organic products. They sell very high quality essential oils and supplies, along with skincare products, accessories, and body scrubs.

One thing I really like about their oils is that they are super concentrated and have long lasting smells. You only need a few drops to get maximum usage!

4 things to look for when buying essential oils

You want to find a brand that doesn’t use synthetic fillers or adulterated oils and sources their plant materials properly. There are a few things you can consider when finding a reputable company and deciding where to buy essential oils.

1. Sourcing

The first thing to consider is where the essential oil company sources their materials. Do they control their own farms or buy from local growers?

Neither is better than the other.

The most important thing to consider is where the plants are grown. Plants that grow in their country of origin (instead of those that are farmed in other locations) will provide a higher quality oil.

2. Growing and Harvesting

Growing conditions are also a very important aspect of finding quality essential oils. Sustainable growing practices and organic, chemical-free conditions are optimal.

If essential oils are to be used for medicinal reasons, you want to be sure that you are using the best plant material for your oils.

3. Distillation

The distillation process is an important step in producing superior essential oils. Temperature, pressure, and equipment all have an impact on the quality of the oil produced.

Look for a company that controls the process or is at least closely working with their distiller.

4. Testing

Testing is one of the more important aspects of finding quality essential oils. Every batch of oil should be tested. Check the company website for testing information – it should be freely shared.

If a company does not perform standard tests on their oils, find a new company.
